Our Horse Camp Program
Spruce Meadow Farm offers one of the best horseback riding camps programs in the Western New York area. It is targeted for ages 5-15 and is a great way for those new to horses to become acquainted with them and learn solid basic riding skills!
Horseback riding camps are a great opportunity to develop confidence, self-respect, self esteem and learn how to develop partnerships. It is also a fun-filled, learning adventure with horses and good friends!
Campers learn safety, riding and horsemanship skills, but most importantly they learn to develop a connection with their horse that creates a lasting partnership and lifelong memory.
When Are Horseback Riding Camps Offered?
Our horseback riding camps are offered as a day camp all summer long as well as during spring and winter breaks from school.
Summer horseback riding camps run weekly beginning the last week in June and continue through the last week in August. Each week is a new session.
There are both morning and afternoon sessions as well as full days. Morning sessions run from 8:30-12:30, afternoon sessions run from 1:00-5:00. The full day goes from 8:30-5:00.
Camp Activities
The horseback riding camps sessions include instruction in safety, riding, horsemanship, horse care and goal setting. There are also craft activities, games and an end of the week horse show.
What To Bring To Horseback Riding Camps
Long pants and a boot or shoe with a small heel are required for riding. You may bring your own ASTM approved equestrian helmet or use one of ours.
In hot weather campers may want to bring shorts and sneakers to wear when they are not riding. They can use the bathroom for changing.
Make sure to pack drinks and snacks (and lunch if staying for the full day!)
A camera is also needed for your weekly scrapbook project. Disposable is fine!
Meet Our Camp Riding Instructors
Our camp riding instructors are in charge of overseeing their camp session and planning the riding lessons. Both of our instructors have been in charge of the camp riding program for the past three years.
Our morning session instructor, Nicole (Nicki) Tarbell, has been riding at Spruce Meadow Farm for over 10 years and has been working in the horse camp program for the past 6 years. She has competed successfully in hunters, jumpers and eventing.
Nicki is currently in her third year in the equestrian program at Morrisville State College and is planning on a career in equine physical therapy. We are very happy to have her as part of our horse camp team!
Erin Toone has also been with Spruce Meadow Farm the past 10 years. Erin is in charge of the afternoon camp session. She is an accomplished rider that has helped out with many of the horses in our program. She shows successfully in hunters, jumpers and eventing.
Erin is in her third year Alfred University and is planning on going to veterinary school when she finishes up at Alfred. She is lucky to have the companionship and support of her “best buddy” and riding partner, Fancy, and we are lucky to have her as part of our team!
